Lesson Plan - Dialing 911

Goals/ Objectives:

· Students will know the importance of dialing 911 in emergency situations.
· Students will be able to give the operator all important information during an emergency.
· Students will be able to write a song or jump rope or handclap chant about dialing 911.

Materials:

· Paper and pencils
· Simple musical instruments (optional) such as recorders, auto harp, tambourines, or bongo
drums.

Procedure:

· Ask students what Chase and Seemoor do in almost every situation.
· Have students demonstrate dialing 911.
· Create several scenarios and ask in which one they would need to call 911.
· Review the situations in which Chase and Seemoor call 911.
· Ask them to speculate what happens when a person dials 911.
· Explain that an operator answers, and they need the caller to give them all important information such type of emergency, the caller's name, location and phone number.
· Tell the child that the operator will send the police, fire department, or an ambulance
depending on the emergency.
· Sometimes the 911 operator might have important instructions for the caller.
· Explain that it is extremely important that the caller follow these instructions.
· Put the students into teams of three.
· If available, give them simple musical instruments.
· Have them write a song, jump rope or hand clap a chant about dialing 911.
· When the students are finished allow them to perform their chants for the class.
· Check the compositions to see if all understood the lesson.

Evaluation:

· Listen to the answers to the questions and check 911 compositions to be sure students have achieved the goals for this lesson.
