Lesson Plan - Safety Around Animals
Goals/ Objectives:
· Students will understand that many animals can be dangerous.
· Students will be able recognize animal threats.
· Students will be able to identify these animals.
Materials:
· Magazines such as Zoo News, Field and Stream, National Geographic.
· Any other magazines that could have pictures of various animals.
· Butcher paper, scissors, marker and glue.
Procedure:
· On butcher paper, make one column headed "Dangerous Animals", and another column
headed "Animals that could be Dangerous."
· Explain that some animals are dangerous to humans, while other animals can be dangerous
under certain circumstances.
· An example: A rattlesnake is dangerous, if it bites, because it has venom that could make a
person very sick. A strange dog might be dangerous because it could have a disease called
rabies or it could attack a person.
· Explain that a dog could be healthy and friendly, but strongly discourage students from
taking that risk.
· Give other examples of animals that could be dangerous and give explanations.
· Paste a picture of each category of animal in the appropriate column to show students
what they will do.
· Have students clip pictures of animals from magazines and glue them in the appropriate
column.
· As students place the pictures in the column have them explain why they think the animal
might be dangerous.
· Remind students of Chase's advice to Seemoor when they encounter the squirrel.
· Emphasize, that no matter how cute the animal appears, it could still be dangerous.
Evaluation:
· Look at where the students place their pictures and listen to their reasons for the placement
to determine whether goals have been met.
